Chapter Eight

Miles

My chest heaved as I woke up from a nightmare about my car crash. I dreamt that I hit the telephone pole, but this time I didn’t make it. I watched from the outside as Jake found my body and wept over me. It wasn’t fear of dying that woke me, but grief over seeing Jake so distraught. I couldn't stand to witness him so upset, even in a dream.

I scrubbed the sleep from my eyes and looked at the alarm clock on Jake’s nightstand to see it was a quarter past three in the morning. He said if I woke up during the night, I could have more pain medicine any time after two. My head was only a little sore, but I didn’t want the pain to get worse, so I swallowed the pill Jake laid out for me, along with a glass of water and a small bowl of Lucky Charms. I thought it was adorable that the man ate sugary breakfast cereal. Not gonna lie; I like marshmallows in my cereal too. It’s so much better than that healthy bran crap.

I gulped down half of the water and munched on a handful of cereal, not wanting to get sick to my stomach again. My bladder was too full to let me get back to sleep, so I padded quietly into the bathroom.

After relieving myself and washing my hands, I stopped in the hallway when I heard a sound like freight train barrelling through the apartment. I tiptoed into the living room to discover the noise was Jake’s snoring. I was surprised he hadn’t pulled the curtains off the window with how hard he was sucking in air.

Now that I knew what the noise was, it didn’t bother me. I actually found it kind of cute. What wasn’t cute was the way Jake was hanging off of the loveseat. He was way too tall to be sleeping on it; his legs dangled off the end of the armrest and his neck was folded to the side to fit on the cushion. He’d wake up in a lot of pain if he spent the whole night like that.

“Jake?” I called, but he didn’t budge. I closed the distance between us and ran my hand through his hair. “Jake?”

I nearly jumped out of my skin when Jake sat bolt upright with wide eyes. “What’s wrong? Are you okay? Are you sick again?”

“No, no, I’m fine,” I replied quickly. Suddenly I was better than fine when Jake’s blanket slid off of his shoulders and pooled around his hips, giving me a full view of his bare chest. It and his stomach were firm with just a shadow of muscle here and there, probably from lifting patients all the time. He had a patch of dark blond hair nestled between his pecs and another that led straight down from his belly button and unfortunately disappeared beneath the blanket.

I realized I was staring at him like an open mouthed creeper when he asked, “Is everything okay?”

Hmm? What? Where am I? Oh, right.
